Greetings!
Back when I knew how to read, one of my favorite authors was Ursula K. Le Guin (http://www.ursulakleguin.com/), who practiced her art in the genre of "fantasy and science fiction." She is also a practicing Buddhist, and her expression of the Dharma leaks out through her writing, as in this excerpt from a short story entitled "Solitude" (the word "magic" here is a reference to the negative effects of technology, as experienced by the protaganist):
By solitude the soul escapes from doing or suffering magic; it escapes from dullness, from boredom, by being aware. Nothing is boring if you are aware of it. It may be irritating, but it is not boring. If it is pleasant the pleasure will not fail so long as you are aware of it. Being aware is the hardest work a soul can do, I think.
Be aware that our activities are on schedule this week at Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church:
Friday -
5:30 PM: Silent meditation.
Sunday -
4:00 PM: Meditation/service
5:00 PM: Book discussion. The prescription from Dr. John:
What We're Reading: The Healing Power of Mind
Author: Tulku Thondup
For Discussion this Week: Chapter 10, "Healing With Nature's Energy," Pages 139-144
Comments from John: Despite our attempts to disrupt nature's intended flow, Tulku wisely observes: "Mother Earth majestically tolerates everything, good or bad, strong or weak. Earth is present for all during prosperity and barrenness alike. Earth is peaceful whether the sun shines or a storm rages, unchanging by day or night. It is our solid foundationour home." Can we eliminate all the unhealthy energies that cause worry, insecurity, and unproductiveness? Tulku suggests we might by becoming one with the earth's boundless strength.
